Until recently, to host a reliable and fault-tolerant service, server administrators had to use redundant servers for failover, creating a proliferation of underutilised machines that must be managed while they consume power needlessly. This session looks at why server utilisation rates of less than 5% are commonplace and what this costs in terms of hardware, power, environment management, and rack space, and what organizations are doing today with virtualisation technology to solve this problem.
