Apache uses a separate child process for each active request, and since the httpd process has an in-memory footprint of 4-5MB (RSS), we need 5MB of RAM in the server for each concurrent request. Thus, when our site gets busy (3000-4000 simultaneous, transactional, SSL requests) we use up a great deal of RAM with Apache.
